Hi all, hoping you are well and keeping safe. Seeing as this is my first post, I was torn between starting something entirely different or reverting back to some of my old posts I had posted on Instagram. I chose the second option and picked one of my biggest successes and inspiration stories - my journey with my hair! It sounds cliche but looking after my hair made me want to look after myself and others more. I will now detail exactly what my steps and best pieces of advice are:
Do not ever comb out your hair without there being water and moisture and use a wide tooth comb to see the most progress and reduce breakage
Deep condition your hair every other week and also wash your hair every other week so that you don't get a build up of product and oil in your hair
Develop more of an understanding of your hair type beyond the broad numbers and letters i.e. the porosity of your hair (done using the porosity test) which can also help you decide which products are suitable for you and which aren't - for example, I have low porosity hair, meaning that my hair doesn't retain moisture that well. Because of that, I frequently moisture my hair, even when it's in a protective style. Additionally, if I am using protein treatments then I only use them once a month as they easily dry out my hair
Always sleep with a silk bonnet/durag on or invest in a silk pillow (that is more on the pricier side)
When washing your hair, run the shampoo and conditioner through the length of your hair rather than only scrunching it at the scalp as this can tangle your hair strands
Don't wait for your hair to completely dry before moisturising it again - if you notice that there is a lot of product build up not properly penetrating your scalp then this may be a sign that your hair should be washed
Extra tip: I tend to alternate between using moisturisers and leave in conditioners. So, I may use a leave in conditioner after I've just washed my hair but then the next time I need to moisturise, I use a moisturiser (my personal favourite is the Sofn'free curl activating cream)
I hope that you enjoyed my tips and found at least love to emulate in your own hair care routine! All the best, thank you for reading
