Ways to get your curl pattern back by finger curling

If you are like me and you opt and dream of wearing loads of protective styles to avoid facing your reflection and dealing with your crown then this post is definitely for you and I encourage you to keep reading because it gets easier…

Some years ago I got tired of adhering to the typical trajectory of a black woman’s natural hair, the commonality of a failed perm causing severe breakage. It was at that point that all the women in my family from all cultural backgrounds came forth to support me through cutting my hair to start my growth journey from scratch and from that point on, it really has been an uphill battle.

I have tried applying numerous different products onto my hair follicles to decide which one would give me the most defined curls, I have put gel into places it shouldn’t have been put and even considered re-perming. Why? Because I was told that I wasn’t ‘African’ enough or that my curls weren’t ‘tight’ enough. I was told that there was no way that my hair couldn’t still have relaxer in it, even after all of it was cut out and chopped up and that was simply because the accusers couldn’t see my curls and maybe they were mad because I wouldn’t let them run their fingers through my hair to feel the kinks and knots. Whatever their reasons, it made me furious and I didn’t care enough about my hair and that was wrong because uphill battles means you take the trials and tribulations that come with learning and growing.

So now I present to you my most recently discovered mechanism for getting your more natural curl pattern back. This requires no heat whatsoever but you will definitely need the following: a good moisturiser and sealant (please see my first ever blog post for some of my favourite recommendations if you are perplexed on where to begin with your head of hair); to ensure the maximum moisturisation levels for your headtop, a sturdy wide tooth comb to use when you most desire (this will ensure that when you finger curl your hair strands they are less likely to get knotted and cause breakage) and preferably an already favourite selected protective style to get some pre-definition from your curls before you begin finger curling but after you have taken this style out

All steps detailing the exact mechanisms and different results of the finger curling hair method can be seen below:

Steps –

1. Moisturise your hair, using a sealant if you want (I tend to always to do this) and then let your hair set in the protective style before moisturising it – I would suggest that you comb out your hair whilst it is well moisturised to ensure your hand strands are incredibly stretched out, ensuring that the least amount of breakage will occur

2. After your desired period of time (preferably whilst your hair is still moisturised), take out your protective style. If you have cornrows in then I would suggest that you undo your hair row by row and if you have twists in I would suggest that undo your hair twist by twist

3. You’re now ready for inverted finger twisting, or what is more officially called finger curling. What you do is take your hair and split a small clump of her into two strands and spin one into a strand either rotating your finger clockwise or anticlockwise and then do the same for the second strand of hair. Do this for your whole head of hair and then see the results

Results –

1. After an intense moisturising sessions using a range of products from the Taliah Waajid brand

2. After another intense moisturising and twisting session using my typical products where information on these specific bottles and tubs can be found in my first ever blog post!

If you try this method, please tag me in a picture or DM it to me via Instagram via @ldxbootique (I am also on TikTok), because I would love to see the results on yourselves and tell your friends and family about this too because this is definitely a method that needs to be passed on and reach the masses within our communities!

Thank you so much for reading and I can’t wait to talk more with you in my next blog post. Love from, K x
